Geboren 1968, wuchs ich in Villach auf, wo ich die musikalischen Grundlagen des Zusammenspiels und Zusammensingens als Klarinettist in der Stadtkapelle Villach und als Tenor im A-cappella-Chor Villach kennen und lieben lernte.
1987 begann ich mein Studium an der mdw (Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst in Wien) in den Fächern Klarinette und Musikerziehung, sowie Geographie und Wirtschaftskunde an der Universität Wien.
Das Studium war immer begleitet vom Singen in Chören und Ensembles: Wiener Kammerchor, Arnold Schoenberg Chor, ORF-Chor, Kärntner Männerquartett … Folglich legte ich den Schwerpunkt meines Studiums auf die „Leitung von vokalen Gruppen“, unterstützt von meinen Lehrern Herwig Reiter und Johannes Prinz.
Die intensive Beschäftigung mit Inhalten der Kommunikationswissenschaften und Gruppendynamik ließ mich meine Diplomarbeit schreiben – ein Referenzwerk über das Beziehungsgeflecht innerhalb eines Chors und dessen Leitung, mit dem Titel „Der Chor als Gruppe“. Dafür erhielt ich den Würdigungspreis des Bundesministeriums für Wissenschaft, Forschung und Kunst.
Fünf Jahre lang leitete ich den „Albert Schweitzer Chor“, assistierte im „Wiener Kammerchor“, von 1997 bis 2002 schloss ich ein Gesangsstudium an der mdw ab und ergänzte so mein Wissen über das stimmliche Fordern und Fördern. Das Einsingen von Chören und die stimmliche Arbeit mit Gruppen ist dadurch wohl eine Spezialität von mir geworden.
Seit 1996 unterrichte ich an einem Wiener Gymnasium die Fächer Musik, Kulturwerkstatt und Chor, seit 2002 am Konservatorium für Kirchenmusik Wien die Fächer Chorleitung, Ensemble und Ensembleleitung und leite die beiden dort ansässigen Chöre.
Parallel dazu etablierte ich mich in der österreichischen Chorszene zunächst als Komponist von Chorkompositionen, die ins Rhythmisch-Performative gehen. Nach einigen Jahren gesellten sich immer öfter auch obligat gesungene Chorkompositionen dazu, sowohl weltliche als auch geistliche. Nahezu alle Kompositionen waren Auftragswerke von verschiedensten Institutionen, Chören und Chorwettbewerben.
Eine Bildungskarenz im Jahr 2020/21 ermöglichte mir den Einstieg in eine langersehnte Schauspielausbildung. Nach dreieinhalb Jahren legte ich die Bühnenreifeprüfung im Fach Schauspiel ab.
Das Komponieren von Chormusik, die Verbindung von Szene und Chor in verschiedensten Projekten, die Unterrichtstätigkeit auf Seminaren und Sommerkursen und nunmehr auch das Schauspielen bei verschiedensten Gelegenheiten und in eigenen Produktionen gestalten mein berufliches Leben sehr bunt und vielfältig.
ABOUT ME (english version)
Born in 1968, I grew up in Villach, where I learned to appreciate and love the fundamentals of ensemble playing and singing as a clarinetist in the “Stadkapelle” (a brass-band with wind-instruments) and as a tenor in the Villach A-cappella Choir.
In 1987, I began my studies at the mdw (University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna) in clarinet and music education, as well as geography and economics at the University of Vienna.
My studies were always accompanied by singing in choirs and ensembles: the Vienna Chamber Choir, the Arnold Schoenberg Choir, the ORF Choir, the Carinthian Men’s Quartet… Consequently, I focused my studies on “conducting vocal groups,” supported by my teachers Herwig Reiter and Johannes Prinz.
My intensive engagement with the fields of communication sciences and group dynamics led me to write my thesis — a reference work on the network of relationships within a choir and its leadership, titled “The Choir as a Group.” For this, I received the Commendation Award from the Federal Ministry of Science, Research, and the Arts.
For five years, I conducted the “Albert Schweitzer Choir” and served as an assistant with the “Vienna Chamber Choir”; from 1997 to 2002, I completed vocal studies at the mdw, thereby expanding my knowledge of vocal training and development. As a result, warming up choirs and vocal work with groups has become something of a specialty of mine.
Since 1996, I have been teaching music, cultural studies, and choir at a Viennese high school; since 2002, I have been teaching choir conducting, ensemble, and ensemble conducting at the Vienna Conservatory of Church Music, where I also direct the two resident choirs.
At the same time, I established myself in the Austrian choral scene, initially as a composer of choral works with a rhythmic and performative focus. After a few years, I began to increasingly include choral works with obligatory vocal-singing, both secular and sacred. Nearly all of these compositions were commissioned by a wide variety of institutions, choirs and choral competitions.
A sabbatical in 2020–21 allowed me to begin a long-awaited acting training program. After three and a half years, I passed the stage proficiency exam in acting.
Composing choral music, combining stage performance with choir in a wide variety of projects, teaching at seminars and summer courses, and now also acting in various settings and in my own productions make my professional life very colorful and diverse.
